Lanai is a tranquil island of some 141 sq. miles, with a population of 2,800, near to the island of Maui. Lanai was once famous for its pineapples but now it mainly grows organic vegetables for its two five star award winning resort hotels.
The Manele Bay Hotel, with its beautiful gardens is located, by the fine sandy beach, at Hulopo'e Bay. The bay with its dolphins and the ocean around Lanai is rated one of the world's top scuba diving destinations, thanks to the exceptional clarity of its water.
Its sister hotel is The Lodge at Koele and is located in the higher and cooler central area of the island not far from Lanai City, which is really a small village, of local shops, bungalows and gardens. The Lodge at Koele, is set in a peaceful tropical garden complete with an orchid house.
The hotels operate two excellent and challenging golf courses designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus.
Lanai can be reached by air or by boat, from the harbour at Lahaina, Maui. This is a quiet and peaceful island with just 2,000 residents who mainly work in agriculture and for the hotels. The island is best explored by four wheel vehicles, as many roads are unpaved, there are no traffic lights or rush hours to worry about.
There are horse riding and walking trails the best known is named after George Munro, a New Zealander, who in the early 1900's planted thousands of Norfolk pines, which now grow in all their natural beauty beside the trail which, leads to the highest point on the island.
Not far from The Lodge at Koele are the peaceful and unspoilt grass covered hills overlooking Shipwreck Beach and the Pacific. The only sound you will hear is the wind and perhaps a rare Hawaiian bird as you gaze down at the stunningly beautiful views of the ocean and the island of Maui with its green valleys, and mountains.
