Some ten miles long and about 2,800 feet deep, Waimea Canyon, which means "reddish waters", was cut by the Waimea-Poomau River. It was in the Waimea area that Captain James Cook first came ashore, it was described by Mark Twain as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," it is a spectacular site and well worth a visit.
