There are a few small communities with some interesting shops and plenty of good cafés and restaurants. Well worth a visit is the Haliimaile General Store, built around 1918, with its excellent selection of locally grown food served in a colorful old plantation style, high-ceiled restaurant. There are numerous up country walking trails from leisurely to serious hiking, they all offer beautiful countryside and stunning views.
On the southern shoulder of the mountain lies the 25,000-acre Ulupalakua Ranch, which was started by a famous sea captain, James Makee in 1843. Apart from being a working ranch it is the home to the Tedeschi Vineyards an ideal location to enjoy a picnic and a glass of the excellent wine.
Kulu, is the garden and agricultural area of Maui, there are several well-established gardens that you can visit, including Clouds Rest Protea Farm, which is one of 50 protea farms in the islands. Kula Botanical Gardens includes a wide variety of tropical plants.
