The North Shore's greatest claim to fame is that it is the surfing capital of the world. Winter storms, often thousands of miles away in the pacific, drive huge waves on to this coastline.
Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay are three of the great surfing beaches and when during the winter, locals and visitors hear that "surfs up" this is where everyone heads for.
Each December there are three major surfing competitions known as "The Triple Crown" and surfers come from all over the world to compete. Surf City is Haleiwa, once a sugar-plantation town, it is now the home of big wave surfing, many hippies came to live here in the 60's.
That slightly bohemian rustic atmosphere is still in evidence, in its bars, cafes, boutiques and arts and crafts. You will get a real Hawaii flavor by visiting this area.

There are numerous parks such as Kaena Point State Park, designated a" natural area" home to many rare native Hawaiian plants and many different species of seabirds. Schools of spinner dolphins are frequent visitors as are whales during the winter Months.
